Guatemala and the Dominican Republic make spectacular progress

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – The quarter-finals of the 2022 Concacaf Men’s Under-20 Championship in Honduras are set following the results of Sunday’s round of 16 in which Guatemala, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and Mexico qualified for the last eight of the tournament.

The day started in dramatic fashion with Guatemala edging Canada 4-3 in a penalty shootout
after a 1-1 draw at the Estadio Nacional in Tegucigalpa.

Guatemalan GK Jorge Moreno came on early with a penalty save in the 34th over Lowell Wright, but Moreno’s counterpart Canadian GK Ben Alexander showed he was just as good when he saved the penalty d’Arquimides Ordonez in the first half to keep it scoreless. .

The score of 0-0 held until the end of the 90 minutes, which meant 30 minutes of extra time and Canada were able to take a 1-0 lead in the 100′ on a conversion penalty from Kamron Habibullah. However, Guatemala leveled the score in the dying moments, with Omar Villagran going 1-1 at 120′.

Things had to be settled on the spot and Guatemala proved the most clinical to win the 4-3
shootout victory.

Jamaica 2 Haiti 1

The action was equally intense in the second game of the day as Jamaica beat Haiti 2-1 at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula.

Jahmari Clarke scored her third WUC20 goal inside the 4′ to give Jamaica a 1-0 lead by taking a throw-in and slipping a shot into the net. Haiti found an equalizer however, and it was no surprise to see Steevenson Jeudy score with a powerful header in the 50′ for his fifth goal of the tournament.

Things appeared to be heading for extra time but the Reggae Boyz would find a late winner at 84′ through Tarick Ximines, who stabbed a loose ball for Jamaica to win.


Dominican Republic 5 El Salvador 4

Arguably one of the wildest CMU20 matches in recent memory came next at the Estadio Nacional, where the Dominican Republic outlasted El Salvador 5-4 in a thrilling back-and-forth affair.

Qualifying for the Round of 16 straight from WUC20 Qualifiers, the Dominican Republic showed no signs of rust and led 1-0 in the 6th through Israel Boatwright. three minutes
later it was tied, 1-1, as Mayer Gil scored for the Cuscatlecos.

The Caribbean came back at 13′ on a goal from Anyelo Gomez, but El Salvador replied again on Gil’s second goal of the day at 37′. El Salvador then took their first advantage at 43′ with a goal from Ronaldo Arevalo, before the Dominican Republic then leveled 3-3 at 47′ with Angel Montes De Oca’s goal.

El Salvador came back in the lead, 4-3, thanks to Jonathan Esquivel, but three minutes later it was 4-4 on a second from Montes De Oca. The winning goal would then finally go in the direction of the Dominican Republic, while Edison Azcona found the back of the net at 78 ‘to deliver the winning final 5-4.


Mexico 6 Puerto Rico 0

The evening was then capped off with Mexico beating Puerto Rico 6-0 at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano.

Fidel Ambriz showed his exceptional talent with a slalom race that ended in a finish and a 1-0 lead for Mexico at 24′. El Tricolor were in full swing and doubled to 2-0 at 33′ on a hard kick from outside the box by Christian Torres.

The momentum stayed with Mexico in the second half, as Esteban Lozano nodded on 49′ for a 3-0 lead and Salvador Mariscal fired a fourth on 54′. Isaias Violante and Jesus Hernandez then scored at 71′ and 79′ to complete the score 6-0.
