Haim nails the moto leather trend dominating fall fashion

The Haim sisters – Este, Danielle and Alana – have become known for their infallible Louis Vuitton stage uniforms of minimal bra tops and big, wide-legged pants. But the girls adopted a trendy new look today at the Louis Vuitton Spring 2023 show, leaning into leather-accented tailoring. The looks were a great callback to the motorcycle-tinged days of Y2K fashion. Danielle wore a red and black leather jacket over a skintight, luminescent brown dress, while Alana opted for an expertly crafted leather shoulder accessory, which we thought vaguely resembled the structural shoulder pads of football players.

Marrying hard-edged leather with softer silhouettes and fabrics is set to become a major fall trend. Late last month, Rihanna wore a racing-style jacket by New York designer Dion Lee to a party. In fact, Mr. Lee has provided motorcycle fashion for more than one pop diva. The designer worked a plethora of leather looks for Spanish pop star Rosalía and her Motomami world Tour. Diesel – an early stalwart – has enthusiastically embraced his motorcycle aesthetic, sending out brightly colored padded leather jackets for his Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 shows. fashion ; Balenciaga’s spring 2023 show featured a messy mud pit suitable for a monster truck race.

The trend continued to reign supreme at the Louis Vuitton Spring 2023 show today. Creative director Nicolas Ghesquière sent a handful of sturdy leather jackets, some with nostalgic patchwork designs, down the runway. Which suggests that an investment in a sturdy leather jacket now pays off much longer than a season. Vroom vroom!
