Hazelbrook Stands Out in Ontario Fashion

Hazelbrook , winner of two sprint entries in the fillies and older mares division this season, will be solidly back to add to her portfolio in the Ontario Fashion Stakes (G3) at Woodbine. The CA$150,000 Ontario Fashion drew a field of six and will be the ninth of 10 races in a schedule that begins at 1:20 p.m. ET.

Hazelbrook, who races for Keith Jones’ True North Stable, started his career with a third-place finish here in the fall of 2020 and won his maiden and first-tier allowance to kick off his next campaign before finishing the track in the Duchess issue.

The Kentucky breed has become its own this season, dropping its second condition for allocation before collecting a double in the Hendrie Stakes (G3) and Sweet Briar Too Stakes listed, with both races taking place at 6 1/2 furlongs.

Last outing, Hazelbrook ran valiantly in defeat as she sought to get the measure of the talented favorite Lady Speightspeare only to fail by less than a length in the seven furlong Seaway Stakes (G3) under Jason Hoyte, his only rider to date.

“We always liked her, but she was very clumsy,” coach Lorne Richards said. “The first time we tried to race her, we barely got her out of the paddock and then she escaped on the parade. So it wasn’t like guys were lining up for the ascend.

“Jason had galloped it for me, and he started to come up, so I said, ‘I’m going to throw it. He knows her, and at least he’s not scared or anything. He did a good job with her. He’s a really good lad and he’s a bit underrated, I think.”

Hoyte has benefited from partnering with Hazelbrook for his two career wins to date.

Richards also recounts that Hazelbrook’s success was achieved despite intestinal issues that have plagued her since she was 2 years old.

“For lack of a better description, it’s like colitis,” the coach said. “She has scarring and inflammation of her intestines and stomach lining, and we don’t know what caused it.

“She’s had some kind of trauma somewhere along the line. She’s made three trips to Guelph (the nearby University of Guelph veterinary clinic) since we got her here. Luckily she didn’t go there. didn’t go this year, but she’s had these kind of attacks. It’s not really colic, but she’s really in pain.

Mary MacKay the junior member of the Ontario Fashion Field at age 3, is also the lone other roster winner, having won the 5 1/2-furlong Shady Well Stakes in her second career outing .

The homebred, which races for Track West Racing and Don Whalen, finished third in an optional allowance seeker in the final start on Sept. 25, finishing behind fellow Ontario Fashion competitors beat the system and Imaging .

Marie MacKay could use her speed more effectively from the outside post on Saturday. Danny Vella trains and Patrick Husbands will be in irons for the first time.

Completing the field will Beyond my budget and Moqadama . Beyond Mybudget finished second behind Hazelbrook in the Sweet Briar Too, but was a well beaten sixth coming off the rail in the Seaway.
