Meet Black Fashion Designers at NYFW: The Runway Capsule Collection

Intuit MailChimp announced his NYFW: shows debut through a new capsule collection and a pop-up store with five Black Council in Fashion (BIFC) selected designers. HOT 97 had the chance to tour the collection, speak to the designers and Mailchimp’s Senior Brand Manager.

In a editorial published by the Washington Post, Beverly Johnson denounced the fashion industry’s longstanding use of black culture while failing to uplift black creatives. She revealed that throughout her career she fought hard for equal pay and inclusion for her black colleagues. Fifty years later, this fight for inclusion is still relevant. Fortunately, there are groups like the Black advice in fashion to ensure there is racial progress in the fashion industry.

In partnership with Intuit Mailchimp, the showroom’s premier sponsor, the Black in Fashion Council has selected five black designers to feature in their BIFC Discovery showroom. For Mailchimp, this partnership acts as an extension of their “Guess less, sell more” country.

Michael Mitchell, Mailchimp’s senior brand manager shared the importance of Mailchimp’s involvement in this partnership. “Our audience is made up of entrepreneurs and small business owners. We want to expand the definition of what an entrepreneur looks like. We thought this would be a great opportunity to uplift those who are historically excluded.” He adds: “We’re a very creative and design-driven organization, so partnering with other designers felt like a synergy. We’re super excited to give them a platform.”

Mailchimp’s commitment to improving creatives extends beyond NYFW. Flowering season is Mailchimp’s ongoing resource for tips on starting, running, and growing a business.

The limited-edition capsule collection featured five designers including Izayla, Kwame Adusei, Mühleder, Studio Ndigoand Samy B.

Meet I’sha Dunston

LA native I’sha Dunston based IZAYLA in 2017. She is a former FIDM. IZAYLA is centered on the empowerment and integrity of women. She credits her school for teaching her cohesion and storytelling through fashion. It prides itself on domestic know-how while ensuring ethical compensation for all its independent contractors. Recently, Kelly Rowland was seen wearing I’sha’s signature jumpsuits.

Meet Larissa

Born in Germany and raised in Brooklyn, Larissa is the founder of Mühleder. She is known for her use of neoprene, a soft material yet thick enough to hold distinctive silhouettes. Larissa’s coins have been worn by the likes of Issa Rae, Zendaya and Marsai Martin. Larissa wanted to create a brand for women like her who are their own bosses, driven and looking to inspire. She has lived in several countries, including Austria, Senegal, France and Nigeria, which she credits with learning what confidence means to women of all cultures.

Originally from Haiti, Waïna is the co-founder of Ndigo Workshop. She was in the industry for 15 years as a fashion designer before launching her own brand with her partner, Viviane Valerius. Waïna first went to nursing school but decided to double her passion by turning to fashion merchandising. Born in 2020, Ndigo’s inspiration is driven by the beauty of the “indigo” color, and the concept of delicate grip; fabrics with fascinating colors and being able to transform them into structured pieces inspired by architecture and design. “I believe in my pieces because I bring something different to the community.”

Meet Samantha

Project Runway alumnus Samantha is the founder of playful and adventurous clothing brand, Samy B.. The brand is a feminine, feminine and eclectic ready-to-wear line. Sammy B is strictly for rule breakers, risk takers and go-getters. With the use of line, attention to detail and a natural ease, Sammy B has become the favorite ‘It Girl’ brand, perfect for the new modern woman. Her creations have been worn by Estelle, Nicki Minaj, Lizzo, Beyoncé.

Meet Kwame

Originally from Ghana West Africa, Kwame Adusei is the founder of Kwame Adusei. Founded in 2021, Kwame’s creations have been worn by the likes of Kylie Jenner, Halle Bailey and Gabrielle Union. With over 10 years of experience in luxury fashion design, Kwame Adusei is the culmination of West African roots translated to a global audience with a perspective grounded in practicality, modernity, sophistication and maturity. .
